12-hour standoff in Rapid City ends peacefully

A 12-hour standoff in Rapid City ended without incident about 10:30 this morning with the  arrest of  a 34-year-old man.

Spruce Plains RCMP said today the Rapid City man will be charged with assault causing bodily harm, but officers are continuing to investigate the possibility of firearms related offences.

RCMP said they went to a home in the western Manitoba community on Thursday at about 10 p.m. after a report of a domestic dispute.

When RCMP arrived they determined a "distraught male" was still inside, a woman had been allegedly assaulted, and there was the possibility of firearms inside.

The woman, who was already outside the home, was taken to Minnedosa Hospital where she was treated and released.

RCMP said because of the danger posed by the firearms they closed a nearby school and evacuated several residents.

The name of the man is not being released to protect the identity of the woman.
