Rally for Israel gives Toews rock-star greeting

A packed house at Manitoba's Rally for Israel on Sunday greeted Public Safety Minister Vic Toews with the cheers and applause normally reserved for rocks stars.

"We will stand with Israel in times of peace and in times of war, " Manitoba's senior federal cabinet minister told more than 250 people at the rally at the Asper Jewish Community Campus gym. He went on to say any threat to Israel is "inevitably a threat to all democratic societies, including Canada."

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg organized the rally for the people of Israel in the wake of the recent violence between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to Toews, dignitaries included Manitoba Immigration Minister Christine Melnick and Amos Guiora, the guest speaker, a professor and expert on legal aspects of counterterrorism who has served for 19 years in the Israel Defence Forces.

The rally at 123 Doncaster St. was to wrap up at 2 p.m.
