Rescue crew locates pair lost in woods

A Winnipeg man and 13-year-old boy spent several hours Sunday lost in the woods of southeastern Manitoba.

The RCMP said a 911 call was received just before 2 p.m. Sunday, stating the 43-year-old man and the boy were lost in the woods, about eight kilometres east of Richer and south of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Cpl. Miles Hiebert said the RCMP were able to use the cellphone’s GPS co-ordinates to locate their vehicle but couldn’t find the pair.

A ground search was initiated, involving RCMP search and rescue, Search and Rescue Manitoba, Office of the Fire Commissioner and Manitoba Conservation The man and boy were found around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, taking refuge in a lean-to, Hiebert said.

"They got out of the elements and just waited," Hiebert said. "Our guys found them and they were OK."

Hiebert said anyone hunting or hiking in the wild should take precautions.

"They should be prepared with emergency equipment because even a short trip can go wrong," Hiebert said.

"Leave a plan with someone and if you do get lost, sit and wait and help will come."
