Residents group plans to sue city over Westgate expansion
A residents group announced today they intend to sue the city over its decision to allow Westgate Mennonite Collegiate to expand.
Last month, city council committee dismissed concerns a proposed expansion of Westgate will worsen traffic congestion. A group of 80 residents from Armstrong's Point told council's appeal committee the high school will increase its enrolment if a proposed 5,000-square-foot expansion moves ahead.
Residents who live adjacent to the school said Westgate has increased from 250 students in the 1970s to nearly 350 students today, and the expansion could make traffic and parking problems worse in the historic neighbourhood.
Another 100 people supported the school's proposed expansion, including Westgate officials who said they need to upgrade their facility.
This afternoon, Armstrong's Point Association announced they plan to take the city to court, saying it is breaking its own laws and has ignored existing community plans.
"Further expansion by Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, or any institution, is not a proper fit for the extremely small site," the association said in a statement.
