Sagkeeng looks at busing students to Pine Falls

Sagkeeng First Nation is meeting later today with insurance adjusters and federal officials to determine if 262 young children displaced by a school fire will be bused to Pine Falls, educated in other community facilities, or taught in portables placed near the junior high school.

Chief Donavan Fontaine said that the band inspected a former public school in Pine Falls Monday, now owned by the municipality and operated as an adult learning centre.

"It would depend on how many classrooms are turnkey, and how many need work," Fontaine said. The band would also have to decide if it’s appropriate to have nursery to Grade 3 in the same building as adult learners.

The desks and chairs and other equipment have largely been removed, Fontaine said.

The Anicinabe Community School suffered $2 million in damage in a Sunday night fire.
