An agreement has been reached between the Sandy Bay Teachers' Association and the Chief and Council of Sandy Bay First Nation.
A statement released Friday by the Manitoba Teachers' Society on behalf of the two groups did not disclose the details of the agreement.
Earlier this week, the MTS had warned teachers in a posting on its website about taking a job at Sandy Bay. The MTS revealed deductions were being made by the First Nation but the 57 teachers employed there were not receiving health benefits or life insurance and that one retired teacher was not receiving a pension. Union dues were also being deducted but not received by the MTS.
In a report published by APTN National News, Chief Russell Beaulieu said he inherited the problem when he took over as chief in October 2012. He estimated nearly $1 million in health and pension benefits deducted from teachers were not forwarded to the pension or benefits providers but he said he is not aware of where the money went.
The MTS statement said the two sides had "come to a resolution agreeable to all parties to resolve the issues presently before the Manitoba Labour Board and will strive to ensure clear communication in the future so that they may continue to build upon their strong relationship and deliver efficient services to all members of the community."
