Saskatoon mayor, band councillor share urban First Nations development successes

The Mayor of Saskatoon would like to dispel a few myths about urban reserves.
Don Atchison was joined by Coun. Harry Lafond from Muskeg First Nation at the Winnipeg Free Press News Café this morning at 11 a.m. to discuss their success in developing an urban economic development zone.
They described their relationship as a partnership where everybody in Saskatoon benefits. In fact, Atchison said he would challenge anybody to come to his city and try to figure out where an urban reserve starts or ends.
The urban reserves not only own land, collect rent and contribute to city coffers but they also hire aboriginal and non-aboriginal people, alike.
Several Saskatchewan First Nations have set up economic development operations in Saskatoon and pumped millions of dollars into the local economy.
Several First Nations in Manitoba are awaiting word on a potential urban reserve in Winnipeg at the vacant Kapyong Barracks in south Winnipeg.
The potential plans, however, have proven to be controversial as opponents have voiced their concerns about such an entity setting up in the area.
