Premier in Brazil for trade mission

Premier Greg Selinger today begins a trade mission in Brazil, where he will also be one of two Canadian premiers to attend a UN conference on the environment.

The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development is so far shaping up to be a disappointment, with many calling the agenda far from ambitious and unlikely to produce any concrete global action on climate change or pollution.

Few major world leaders and few Canadian environmental groups are attending. Only Quebec Premier Jean Charest will be there, along with federal Environment Minister Peter Kent, who was not optimistic about the conference.

In a release Sunday, the province said Selinger will use the trip to tout Manitoba’s plan to combat climate change and clean up the environment, and, along with several Manitoba business people, he’ll try to drum up more trade with Brazil.

Trade with Brazil neared the $100-million mark last year – miniscule for Brazil but sizeable for Manitoba.
