An aggressive chase in Osborne Village has led to the arrest of a 25-year-old Winnipeg man.
Around 2 p.m. on Friday, police were called to a store in the 400 block of River Avenue where a shoplifter allegedly assaulted a 65-year-old security officer.
The suspect escaped the store and ran towards the Osborne Street Bridge. Once there, he assaulted two more men, 23 and 53-years-old, causing minor injuries to both.
The suspect then ran into traffic, forcing vehicles to stop. He proceeded to damage a van and then continued running to the west side of the bridge.
He then jumped down from the bridge onto the north bank of the Assiniboine River.
A member of the police forensics unit saw what happened on the bridge and chased the suspect by the river.
The officer tried to detain the suspect, who refused to cooperate. The officer had to use his pepper spray on the suspect to ensure he complied with directions.
When other police patrols arrived on the scene, the suspect produced a weapon and aimed it at the officers.
The cops eventually got the suspect to drop his weapon and he was taken into custody.
Alexander Sanderson is being detained at the Provincial Remand Centre and charged with a variety of alleged offences.
