One man is dead following a bloody altercation at a Portage Avenue apartment block Friday night.
Police and emergency personnel responded to a call at the Capri apartment building at 2130 Portage Ave. just after 9 p.m. where they found three people suffering from various injuries.
Two of the victims, a 42-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, were taken to hospital in stable condition.
A third victim, a 39-year-old male, suffered upper body injuries and was taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died as a result of those injuries, Winnipeg police said.
His name was not released this morning.
A resident of the building, who identified himself as Wayne, said one male was on the ground, unconscious, eyes open and covered in blood just outside the front door.
"I walked right by the man, looked down at him, and there was blood head to toe," he said. "He wasn't breathing. He looked to be gone to me."
Wayne said a woman he could only describe as "hysterical" was standing off to the side, still holding a pair of scissors.
"She was yelling something to the effect of 'he attacked me.' She was ranting," he said.
Police soon arrived, grabbed her and handcuffed her, Wayne said.
He said the incident appeared to have started outside a second-floor suite. Blood was visible on a door, down the stairs and out the main entry, he said.
"That's as violent an incident as I've ever seen," he said.
Police did acknowledge they believe weapons were involved in the altercation. They are interviewing multiple witnesses, a spokesman said.
The homicide unit is currently investigating the incident. Police would not confirm this morning if any arrests have been made.
