Major snowstorm expected this weekend

Snowblower tuned up? Snow tires on the car?  It's here: a snowfall warning has been issued for the city of Winnipeg.

A Colorado low is headed to southern Manitoba this weekend. Snow is expected to begin falling Friday afternoon in the province's southwest and the storm will move east overnight.

The snowfall is expected to be heaviest during the day Saturday, bringing 15 to 25 centimetres of snow -- though "some pockets of up to 30 cm are possible," Environment Canada said in a snowfall warning issued Thursday afternoon.

Areas near the Turtle Mountains and east of Riding Mountain National Park are likely to receive the most snow.

Winds will be in the 30 km/h range, and combined with the heavy snow visibilities are expected to be near zero.  Motorists should be prepared for "very poor" driving conditions across southern Manitoba on Saturday.

The heavy snow is expected to taper off Saturday night, though light snowfall could continue in eastern Manitoba on Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to hover just below zero for most of the weekend.
