City will start plowing residential streets Thursday

Winnipeg's latest snowfall is expected to cost the city about $500,000.

Since Monday morning, Winnipeg received about 13 centimetres of snow, while Brandon got about 20 centimetres. Some smaller communities in southwestern Manitoba really took a hit, including Miami with more than 40 cm of snow.

Moving forward, expect plenty of sunshine and high of -7 C in Winnipeg, but flurries are in the forecast for Thursday.

City of Winnipeg officials launched a snow-clearing operation Monday night to remove snow from the city's main streets. This morning, plows continued to clear main routes, bus routes, collector streets and sidewalks.

Plowing will continue throughout the day and tonight until completed. About 150 pieces of equipment will be used for the clean-up operation.

Winnipeg has budgeted about $26 million for snow-clearing this year.

Last week, city officials revealed it cost Winnipeg $11 million to clear snow from city streets in January -- nearly twice as much as the $6 million the city had budgeted for.

On March 4, 1966, Winnipeg received 35.6 cm of snow in a single day -- the record for extreme daily snowfall in March.

The city will start to plow residential streets on Thursday at 7 a.m. A residential parking ban will be in effect Thursday morning and continue to Saturday at 7 p.m. Residents who live in snow zones slated to be plowed need to move their vehicles.

Vehicles parked in violation of the residential parking ban will receive a $150 ticket, or $75 if paid early, and may be towed to a nearby street.
