Stabbing in The Pas sees cabbie airlifted to Winnipeg for treatment

A cab driver from The Pas was airlifted to Winnipeg after he was stabbed in a robbery attempt early this morning.

RCMP said the 54-year-old cabbie had picked up four passengers – two men and two women – on the Opaskwayak Cree Nation and drove them to a trailer park in The Pas.

When the passengers were getting out, the two men attacked the driver and attempted to rob him.

RCMP said the driver fought back, resulting in both himself and one of his attackers being injured.

The attackers and the two women fled on foot.

The cabbie drove himself to the local health centre.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 23, were arrested by police later.

Two knives were recovered inside the cab.

Police said one of the women passengers was interviewed and released. Police are looking for the other woman passenger, who is considered a witness to the attack.

The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his upper body that required surgery, police said.

The 23-year-old suspect was taken to The Pas Health Complex following his arrest for treatment of his injuries and is in custody, along with the other suspect.

Both suspects are residents of Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

The suspects have not yet been charged.
