Ste. Anne's police officer faces weapons charges, resigns

A former Ste. Anne police officer has been charged with two counts of careless use of a firearm and of pointing a firearm -- specifically, a taser.

Randy Chudyk, a former sergeant, has resigned from the Ste. Anne force.

Back in January, Manitoba’s Director of Policing requested that the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) conduct an independent investigation into the actions of a police officer with the Ste. Anne Police Department.

The ASIRT investigators’ report was sent to independent crown counsel in Manitoba for review. After considering the completed report and crown opinion, the ASIRT Executive Director has determined that one officer from the Ste. Anne Police Department should be charged criminally in relation to his conduct.

Wednesday, ASIRT investigators operating in Manitoba charged Chudyk. His first court appearance is Jan. 10 in Steinbach.

ASIRT is an independent body led by a civilian director with the mandate to investigate incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death, and matters of a serious or sensitive nature that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.
