Suspect in Maryk children's abduction returned to Winnipeg

A Winnipeg man who is alleged to have helped a friend kidnap his two children four years ago has been returned to Winnipeg.

Robert Groen, 41, was extradited to Canada on July 19 and returned to Winnipeg the next day, Winnipeg police said today.

Groen allegedly helped Kevin Maryk kidnap his two young children, Abby and Dominic, then seven and five years old, in August 2008 and hide them in Mexico.

Maryk and Groen were arrested by Mexican authorities at a home in Guadalajara in May. The two children were found safe and returned to their mother, Emily Cablek.

Kevin Maryk remains in custody in Mexico.

Groen faces charges of conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of abduction and failing to comply with the conditions of a undertaking.

Groen is being held in custody.
