The Forks river trail ready for skaters

The second leg of The Forks' river trail has opened earlier than ever before.
The trail opened up down the Assiniboine River to Osborne Street on Sunday, where there are access points at both Osborne and the legislative building. A small portion of the Assiniboine trail opened up last week.
"We haven't been able to go down the Assiniboine for the last two years, so we're really excited to have it ready in time for New Year's celebrations this winter," said Paul Jordan, chief operating officer of The Forks.
"We've known for some time that we'd get an early start on the river trail this season, but the conditions are even better than we'd anticipated."
The Forks is hoping to have the trails open to Hugo Street in the coming weeks. The trails along the Red River continue to be closed.
Last year, the skating trail stayed closed until mid-January.
