The bell tolls today for Manitoba students

Be really careful on the roads today --- two-thirds of the province’s school divisions are holding their first day of classes.

Frontier School Division got going Tuesday, and 11 divisions have first day of classes on Thursday.

Close to 200,000 children are going back to school this week, from nursery in a couple of divisions to Grade 12 everywhere.

You can find what's happening in your division at www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/schools/schooldiv.html .

There won’t be anything appreciably different than when kids fled for the summer back in June. Most of the province’s schools will introduce the new uniform report card this year, and it will be mandatory by the fall of 2013.

The province has decreed that divisions hold professional development and in-service days on the same day throughout each division, to help parents cope with child care arrangements.

Speaking of which, there are 10 of those days, which leaves 186 instructional days to the end of June.

And this year begins the implementation of capping class sizes at 20 kids in kindergarten to Grade 3, a five-year process. Since it’s being phased-in, chances are your kids won’t see a huge amount of change this soon.
