Today could turn out to be the coldest day of the year

Today might be the coldest day of the year.

Forecasts this morning warn wind chills could drop to -41 until winds moderate later today across southern Manitoba.

The region has been held in an icy grip all week with alerts every day that warn exposed skin could freeze in 10 minutes or less, and there’s no relief until the arctic airmass lifts and moves off. That’s not expected until the weekend.

Environment Canada forecasts a mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries this morning, clearing and sunny later. North winds, 30 kilometres an hour, are expected to lighten this afternoon with a high of -25C.

On Thursday there is a 60 per cent chance of flurries late in the morning and early afternoon with a high of - 19 C and and an extreme wind chill of -43.
