Mayor Sam Katz has promised to divulge a vital piece of intelligence with his Toronto counterpart — the geographic location of Winnipeg.
During a trade mission to Chicago on Tuesday, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford suggested the Manitoba capital is adjacent to southern Michigan.
"Oh Manitoba! You were in Manitoba. Winnipeg?" Ford asked after a young woman said she had visited the part of Canada that sits across the river from Detroit.
When told about the blunder on Wednesday, Katz surmised Ford simply mixed up Winnipeg with Windsor, Ont., because both cities begin with a W. Katz then offered to help out Toronto’s mayor.
"I've never had the opportunity to meet Mayor Ford. I can assure you next time I will, I will be very definitive in telling him where Winnipeg is and what a great city Winnipeg is," Katz said.
"As far as geography, I can only speak for myself and my children. They do a very good job of teaching that in school...''
Katz said among the first things students learn about in geography are the provinces, territories, Great Lakes and the capital of every province.
Katz also said even U.S. presidents make little blunders, so he’s not surprised to see Ford follow suit.
"Once a week, you come up with a Rob Ford question," Katz said.
