CN crews moved in heavy equipment to pull five cars off the tracks south of St. Norbert on Easter Sunday following a derailment shortly before 1 p.m.
The five railcars were headed south on tracks that run parallel to Highway 75 to the border and were carrying steel pipe, lumber and plastic pellets, the kind used in the manufacture of water bottles and children's toys.
"From all our records and CN's records, it's not a dangerous product," said Ted Kuryluk, platoon chief and scene commander for the Winnipeg Fire/Paramedic Service.
CN could not advise how long it would take to clear the railcars. Drivers can expect traffic delays on Highway 75 south of St. Norbert for several hours.
