Trans-Canada reopened to Saskatchewan, but still dangerous

Freezing rain makes for hazardous conditions

The Trans-Canada Highway has been reopened to the Saskatchewan border after being closed due to slippery conditions.

Overnight freezing rain has made the long stretch treacherous for driving.

Caution is advised. Some sections are snow-covered and slippery while others are bare but wet and could become icy.

The latest highway information was provided just this afternoon on the Manitoba highways website at www.gov.mb.ca/mit/roadinfo/

An RCMP spokesman said conditions improved as the morning progressed but there are still "lots" of people sliding into ditches.

Environment Canada is calling for a very cloudy but mild weekend.

The freezing rain will end this morning but the temperature drops to about -6 C late in the afternoon, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries. The overnight low is -9 C.

For Sunday, the high is 0 C and there could be more freezing rain, while Monday expect periods of rain or snow with a high of 1 C.
