Trustees reject proposal to create task force on class sizes

Manitoba’s school trustees have overwhelmingly rejected a call from River East Transcona school board for the provincial government to create a task force to prove that smaller class sizes work.

"There has to be some way to evaluate this program" which costs millions of dollars and requires hiring "huge" numbers of new teachers, said RET trustee Wayne Ritcher.

"I’d like to see some empirical evidence" that an NDP election promise will work for kids, said Ritcher. "If it’s not going to work, why are we doing it?"

The government has mandated that 90 per cent of kindergarten to Grade 3 classes must be 20 students or less by 2017.

Trustees voted by about four to one to reject RET’s proposal.
