Twin-plex for Crescentwood isn't at forefront of city discussions

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz said a proposal to take over the city-owned Charles A. Barbour Arena is not at the front of the line when it comes to arena-development plans.

The Corydon Community Centre wants to take over the 50-year-old Crescentwood rink and replace it with a twin-plex as part of a plan to create a $15-million complex.

Today, Katz said the idea is worthy of consideration but not at the forefront of city discussions.

"It’s just in the embryonic stage," Katz told reporters following an executive policy committee meeting. "There are others that are much further down the road."

The city originally put out a call to community groups or private businesses interested in building new ice-skating multiplexes or adding ice sheets to existing facilities in October 2011. That request for proposals yielded eight responses, all of which were rejected by the city.

In November 2012, community services director Clive Wightman said the proposals did not make financial sense for the city. But two of the proposals were good enough to merit further discussions, said protection and community services chairman Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands).

Katz said discussions are continuing with those two groups, but declined to identify them.
