Two charged after allegedly bringing firearms from U.S. illegally

Two Ontario men have been charged with illegal possession and sale of firearms from the United States into northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.

Thomas Peter Atkinson, 22, and Shawn James Hartnell, 29, were arrested Friday by the RCMP "D" Division Customs and Excise Section following a year-long investigation.

Atkinson was arrested in Fort Francis, Ontario while Hartnell was picked up by American authorities in North Dakota.

Atkinson faces 27 charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful transportation of a firearm and unlawful transfer of a firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition.

Hartnell faces the same charges. However, he also faces eight additional charges relating to unlawful possession of a handgun, prohibited magazine and ammunition.
