Man charged with drunk driving after car hits hydro pole

The driver of a car that knocked over a hydro pole in West Kildonan late Thursday night is facing impaired driving charges.
The single-vehicle crash happened just before midnight Thursday near Smithfield Avenue and Scotia Street, causing "fairly extensive damage," Winnipeg police said.
Police said a white 2000 Volvo was driving at high speed when it failed to make a turn and struck the pole, knocking it down.
The two people in the car, both 19-year-old men, were taken to hospital.
The driver is facing charges of impaired driving and running a stop sign. He was released on a promise to appear in court.
Scotia Street was still blocked off Friday morning between McAdam Avenue and Rupertsland Boulevard as crews repaired the hydro pole.
Initially, 72 homes were left without power. At about 3:30 a.m., power was restored to all but six homes in the area. Manitoba Hydro said they expect the pole to be fixed by around noon today.
