Two in hospital after violence on Maryland

Two men are in hospital after violence broke out for a second weekend in the Maryland Street area.

Winnipeg police said today an adult male was rushed from the 600 block of Maryland Street at about 12:20 a.m., after police responded to calls of shots being fired.

Winnipeg police spokesman Jason Michalyshen said the man is in critical condition.

"His condition is very, very serious," he said.

While searching the area, police found another injured man with shooting injuries a block away on McGee Street. That man was taken to hospital in serious condition, but he has since been upgraded to stable.

Michalyshen said police are continuing to investigate the shootings as separate incidents and cannot say whether they are linked.

"We can’t guess, we can’t speculate, we have to base it on facts," he said.

Michalyshen also could not say whether either of the shootings were connected to the two shootings and one stabbing in the area last Saturday, or to Thursday’s double shooting at the Salisbury House restaurant on Pembina Highway which left one man dead and another in hospital.

Last Saturday, two men were shot in separate incidents, one at Sargent Avenue and Langside Street, the other in the 400 block of Maryland Street. A third man was stabbed in the 500 block of Langside Street.

Jeffrey Michael Lau, 23, died Thursday after being shot at the restaurant. Another man, identified by media as Garrick Nickel, 22, is now in stable condition.

Police have not made any arrests on any of the incidents.

Police are advising motorists that both Maryland and McGee Streets between Sargent Avenue and Wellington Avenue are closed for at least this morning.
