U of M aims to poke 1,000 fingers today

Blood, that is.
The University of Manitoba, in conjunction with Canadian Blood Services, is holding a Finger Poke 1,000 event today in an effort to raise awareness about the constant need for blood by testing as many as 1,000 students, staff and faculty at the Fort Garry Campus.
This is the first time the Canadian Blood Services has set out to blood type 1,000 people in just one day.
The testing involves simply poking a donor's finger with a small needle to draw a few drops of blood. The collected blood is then mixed with serum to determine the individual’s blood group (A, B, O or AB) and Rh factor (positive or negative). The test takes about two minutes.
Annually, the University of Manitoba hosts 16 blood donor clinics and contributes approximately 1,700 donations.
In all, there will be 10 locations set up around campus for testing.
