U of M study finds link between spanking and mood, anxiety disorders

A University of Manitoba study that looks at the link between spanking and mental disorders finds that it leads to higher odds of mood disorders and anxiety disorders.

The study – led by Tracie Afifi, an assistant professor at the U of M’s departments of Community Health Sciences, Psychiatry and Family Social Sciences – finds "harsh physical punishment was associated with increased odds of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug abuse/dependence, and several personality disorders."

The study is in the latest edition of Pediatrics.

It’s based on data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, from 2004 and 2005.
