U of W adds soccer program

The University of Winnipeg has received approval to add soccer to its family of Canadian Interuniversity Sport programs.

The announcement came Wednesday after the Canada West conference athletic directors approved men's and women's soccer for the U of W at the winter meetings in Calgary on Tuesday.

The U of W will add soccer to its men's and women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling CIS programs.

Soccer has been played at the U of W for the past two years in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Association. Both the men's and women's teams won league championships the past two years.

The University of Winnipeg soccer teams begin competing in the Canada West Conference in September 2012, a press release stated.
