U of W names gymnasium after one of its sports pioneers

The University of Winnipeg has honoured one of its sports pioneers by naming a gymnasium for him.

The gymnasium inside the Duckworth Centre is now the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium, named after the retired University of Winnipeg faculty member and former director of physical education and recreation.

"David Anderson pioneered the athletic programs that are an integral part of the University of Winnipeg today," Lloyd Axworthy, president and vice-chancellor, said in a statement today.

"We are truly grateful for all that he has done."

Anderson, who came to the university, then called United College, in 1964 and stayed until retiring in 1990, helped create the Wesman Classic tournament, the largest of its type in North America.

As well, Anderson also helped establish the first student-athletic scholarships in the 1970s.

Anderson also was key to designing, funding and building the Duckworth Centre.

The Anderson family themselves have given the university a $400,000 gift — the largest ever directed by a private donor to the Duckworth Centre — to upgrade the athletic facilities in the Duckworth Centre.
