A Texas truck driver is now in some legal hot water after forgetting he’d brought some extra cargo with him as he tried to cross into Canada.
Tommy Earl Daves, 57, is facing a charge under the Customs Act after border officials found a loaded 9 mm handgun inside a duffel bag during a search of his truck and trailer last Saturday. The incident occurred at the Lyleton port of entry.
There are no allegations he was deliberately trying to smuggle the weapon or had any nefarious purpose for it. As a result, a more serious Criminal Code charge was not laid.
Daves has been released on a promise to appear in Winnipeg court on Aug. 11.
