Underground passageways on Main Street reveal history

What’s below the ground tells us a lot about the history of Main and Bannatyne, at one time one of Winnipeg’s busiest corners.

It’s called the Crocus Building now, but past generations of Winnipeggers called it Ashdown Hardware.

The story goes that there are tunnels underneath it and other buildings that once stood on Main Street. Like jail cells left over from Winnipeg’s first jail and courthouse.

The courthouse and other buildings disappeared long ago, but in the basement of the Crocus Building the remains of two underground passageways can still be seen.
