Division's finance committee to study full-day kindergarten, nursery

Don’t expect to see full-day kindergarten and nursery across Winnipeg School Division any time soon.

Trustees nervous about enormous school property tax increases bounced the idea to their finance committee for study Monday night. That committee in turn will ask the administration for detailed reports about costs for salaries and space, including how many elementary schools even have additional classrooms available.

No date was set for the committee to report back. However, a decision to launch a pilot project in even one or two schools next fall would need to be made by the March 15 budget deadline.

Trustee Mark Wasyliw had wanted full implementation across the division by 2018-2019, but said tonight it could take 10 years or even longer to be in every school.
