A demolition crew has begun dismantling the former home of Vi Ann Restaurant in Osborne Village to pave the way for the expansion of a drugstore.

Imrie Demolition has started tearing apart the two-storey structure at 51 Osborne St., immediately south of an existing Shoppers Drug Mart.

The city approved the drugstore expansion in 2011 despite complaints from some Osborne Village residents that a larger store would be out of character with the pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood.

By afternoon, an Imrie trackhoe had removed the rear section of 51 Osborne St. The front section is fenced off.

Immediately north of the project, construction continues on the $17.2-million reconstruction of the Osborne Street Bridge.
