Manitoba’s premier flood fighter has come out of retirement for another historic bout.
Alf Warkentin is back, the province confirmed today.
The senior flood forecaster, who helped battle the 1997 Flood of the Century, is working for the province again on a contract basis.
A government spokesperson said a number of former water experts — former government staffers — have been hired specifically for this year’s flood.
Warkentin downplayed his involvement when contacted Wednesday. Reached by email, he said he’s merely "providing some advice from at home" just like he did in March for the flood outlooks.
The situation on the swollen Assiniboine River west of Winnipeg is being called a one-in-300-year flood.
