Weekend expected to be long on sunshine

WINNIPEG - Today might be a bit wet, but if you can make it to the weekend, you should be rewarded with pleasant long-weekend weather.

Today we expect clouds with sunny periods. There’s a 70 per cent chance of showers this morning, reduced to 30 per cent around noon with risk of thunderstorms. The expected high is 26C, with a UV index of 8 or very high, so cover up.

Tonight will bring clouds and a 30 per cent chance of early evening showers with risk of thunderstorms. Things should clear up this evening, with a low of 15C.

Saturday and Sunday promise to be warm and sunny with highs of 30C both days. Monday may bring some showers, so enjoy the early part of your long weekend, just in case.

What's open, what's closed

Those looking to get in a golf game or buy a bottle for a August long BBQ are also in luck. Liquor stores will be open from noon until 6 p.m. except for Cityplace and Steinbach, and municipal golf courses are open from dawn to dusk.

All City of Winnipeg offices are closed on Monday.

There will be no recycling or garbage collection on Monday. Collection will resume on Tuesday, Day 5 on the five-day cycle. For multi-family apartments, recycling and garbage collection will continue as normally scheduled.

On Monday, Winnipeg Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule.

All libraries are closed on Monday.

The Zoo is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Conservatory is open till 8 p.m.

All indoor pools will close on Monday except Pan Am Pool. It will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Weather permitting, all outdoor pools will be open Monday.  Pool times vary with most pools open noon - 7:30 p.m.

Weather permitting, the following wading pools will be open on Monday; hours vary but most are open 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:

  • Brock Cordova Park,
  • Bronx Park,
  • Dakota Park,
  • JH Bruns Park,
  • John M. King,
  • Home Playground,
  • Keenleyside Park,
  • McKittrick Park,
  • River Osborne,
  • Norquay CC,
  • Pascoe Park,
  • Pirates Park,
  • Vimy Ridge Park,
  • Shaughnessy Park.

All spray pads open from 11 a.m. - 7p.m. and include: Fort Rouge Park, Linden Woods CC, Provencher Park, River Heights CC and St. Norbert CC.

All Leisure Centres are closed on Monday.

The Animal Services Agency will be closed on Monday.

All Municipal golf courses are open from dawn to dusk during the long weekend.

Liquor Marts are open on Monday from noon to 6 p.m with the exception of Cityplace and Steinbach.

The YMCA of Winnipeg is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. with no scheduled classes.
