WINNIPEG -- City council's Assiniboia community committee has approved a Whyte Ridge apartment complex that has been met with resistance from some residents in the southwest Winnipeg neighbourhood.
On Tuesday night, Couns. Grant Nordman (St. Charles), Scott Fielding (St. James) and Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood) voted unanimously to approve the construction of an 84-suite apartment building and eight townhouses on a plot of vacant McGillivray Boulevard land, Nordman said Wednesday morning.
A similar plan previously came before council but was withdrawn by the developer after the Assiniboia committee turned it down. At the time, area councillor Havixbeck said the developer had not conducted sufficient community consultation.
The complex still faces council approval.
The City of Winnipeg has a rental-apartment shortage, with vacancy hovering below one per cent.
The meeting was very heated, Havixbeck said.
"People yelled and were swearing at us and the developers. (It was) very passionate crowd," she said.
