Wide, slow load: Hydro moving giant transformers this weekend

Three giant transformers, each weighing more than 175,000 kilograms and worth about $5 million, will hit the road this weekend as they move from a Winnipeg factory to their new home at Manitoba Hydro’s Riel Station.
The transformers are being installed to improve Hydro’s 500,000-volt line linking Manitoba to Minnesota, according to Manitoba Hydro.
The massive transformers will be moved using a special 320-tire self-propelled trailer brought in specifically for this project. The trailer, taking up two lanes of traffic, is similar to one used in Los Angeles to move the space shuttle Endeavour.
It will take three nights to move each transformer to Riel Station on Highway 207 just east of the city, following a route that is 144 kilometres long.
The trailer, measuring 34 metres long and just under eight metres wide, moves at a speed of only five kilometres an hour.
The moves will start at 8 p.m. and finish at 6 a.m. the next day.
The 320 tires on the trailer allow the weight of the transformer to be distributed evenly over a large area of road, preventing damage to the concrete and asphalt, Hydro said in a release.
The first move is scheduled to start on Sunday at 8 p.m.
