Warning calls for wind chill of -40 to -45

A wind-chill warning has been issued by Environment Canada for Winnipeg and surrounding area, with values of -40 to -45 that will persist throughout the day.

Along with Winnipeg, the warning has been issued for Winkler-Morden and the RM of Bifrost, which includes Arborg, Hecla and Riverton.

According to the warning issued: Another shot of cold Arctic air is pushing into Southern Manitoba and is producing temperatures near or below minus 30 over much of Southern Manitoba. These temperatures combined with 20-30 km/h winds will result in wind chill values of minus 40 to minus 45 that will persist throughout most of the day. At these extreme wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 10 minutes. The wind chill will moderate slightly this afternoon as temperatures recover a few degrees but there will still be a risk for dangerous wind chills to return tonight as temperatures drop into the minus thirties again.

Tonight in Winnipeg , the winds will drop (15 km/h), but so will the temperature (-34C), to create a wind chill of minus 38.

Friday calls for sunny skies and a high of -25. There will be a 60 percent chance of flurries on Saturday with a high of -14C and a low of -32C.

Super Bowl Sunday’s forecast is cloudy, with a high of -17C and a low of -28C.
