Winnipeg man killed in B.C. snowboarding accident

A young Winnipeg man was killed in a snowboarding accident Tuesday at a B.C. resort.

Nick Voyer-Taylor, 22, died from injuries he sustained at the Big White resort, near Kelowna.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service said Voyer-Taylor had been snowboarding before he was found injured, unconscious and partially submerged in water.

Members of the resort’s ski patrol pulled him out and he was taken to Kelowna General Hospital but could not be revived.

Julie Voyer-Taylor said her son left for B.C. five weeks ago, where he worked as a cook at the Big White ski resort. She said his death came on the seventh anniversary of the death of his father.

Voyer-Taylor had worked as a cook at the popular downtown Rudy’s Eat & Drink in Manitoba Hydro Place on Graham Avenue since it opened about 18 months ago.

Friends at the restaurant were devastated by the news about Voyer-Taylor’s death.

"Nick was just a super nice guy," David Jolicoeur said. "He could talk to anybody and he had a lot of friends."

Jolicoeur said Voyer-Taylor planned to stay at Big White until April and then move to Vancouver to work as a chef. Voyer-Taylor was a graduate of J.H. Bruns Collegiate.

The B.C. coroner’s office continues to investigate the death.
