Winnipeggers brave cold to get deals

Winnipeggers braved the bitter cold this Boxing Day morning to try and score the best deals at outlets across the city.

Jody Seman, general manager of the Best Buy on St. James Street, said some shoppers began lining up outside the store as early as 6 p.m. on Christmas Day.

Hundreds of shoppers were lined up outside the store this morning before the store opened at 6 a.m.

"I’d say that’s normal for line-ups on Boxing Day," he said.

Seman would know. He’s worked every Boxing Day for the past 14 years.

At least 120 people are staffed at Best Buy today, Seman said, which represents all of the store’s staff.

"There’s definitely lots of excitement. We get here early so it’s a long day, but you get the energy from everyone else in here. Before you know it, it’ll be 9 p.m. and there’ll be another one in the books."

Many shoppers at Polo Park Mall began entering the mall just after 7 a.m., an hour before most stores were set to open. Over 100 people were lined up outside the Lululemon location alone.

It’s expected that close to 62 per cent of Canadians will take part in Boxing Day shopping, according to a BMO poll released Wednesday.

Alberta, Atlantic Canada, and Ontario are expected to see the most retail sales.
