Chopsticks for dummies
I can’t use chopsticks for the life of me (I’m roughly as co-ordinated as an average person wearing hockey gloves), but these FlipSticks folding chopsticks from Brunton look cool enough to give it another go next time I’m camping. They’re made out of bamboo and stainless steel, fold to a very compact size (thus the name) and include a snappy orange carrying case. And how many chopsticks do you know of that come complete with a one year warranty? Available at www.brunton.com for $32.80 plus $13.90 shipping to Canada.
Keep it cool and dry
A pitcher full of a frosty beverage is a great way to top off your patio table on a hot, sunny day, but there’s one problem. By the time you finish the first glass, your liquid refreshment is not quite so refreshing. It’s warm. Adding ice keeps it cold, but dilutes the drink (and I believe that ruining beer by dumping ice in it may be a federal crime in Canada). The PolarPitcher solves this dilemma by means of an isolated ice chamber, or "ice core centre," that you fill with ice before adding the liquid, thereby cooling the drink without watering it down. The PolarPitcher holds 1.78 litres and is made from BPA-free plastic. Available through amazon.com for $19.95, plus $17.25 shipping to Canada.
Portable pina coladas
If you thought a blender crushing ice was loud, how about the sonic punishment a gas-powered blender working on a pina colada would unleash? This 4.5-kilogram monstrosity actually exists, adding a manly touch to so-called girlie drinks. Powered by a 2.5-hp Poulin motor, with a 1.4-litre drink capacity and a .32-litre fuel tank, the Tailgator lets you whip up a fruity drink anywhere you damn well please, with the ability to crush an entire pitcher of ice in 11 seconds. The fuel economy is rated at 6,500 mpg (margaritas per gallon) — sorry, but I don’t know the metric version of that measurement. Priced at $299.95 plus $11.95 shipping to Canada at www.rvtoyoutlet.com
Barely a shoe
If you want to sport the freakiest footwear on the beach — or trail, or even in the mall — the FiveFingers Classic from Vibram stands a good chance of winning you that distinction. These are the closest thing you can get to going barefoot while still being allowed past the "no shoes, no service" sign at a restaurant. Featuring non-marking performance rubber soles and a thin, two-tone, stretch polyamide fabric upper, the FiveFingers classic is recommended for travel and low-impact activities such as yoga or Pilates. Available for $75 in brown-walnut, grey-black, black-black or verde-grey through www.vibramfivefingers.com. Shipping to Canada adds $9.95.
Wait for iPhone over
Only five more days and you, too, can drop a mortgage payment (a bit less if you pony up for a three-year plan through Rogers, Bell or Telus) to buy Apple’s problem-child iPhone 4. July 30 is the big day for Canadians. While the latest and greatest iPhone was the subject of intense hype that culminated with the discovery of a dropped prototype in a bar, it’s been the so-called "antenna-gate" over the past few months that’s drawn the most attention. While there are definitely signal-loss gremlins, most people haven’t reported an issue and critics have raved over the new iPhone’s 960 x 640 pixel Multi-Touch display. A record 1.5 million were sold the first day in the U.S. Apple is keeping us waiting to the last minute on Canadian pricing, but expect in the neighbourhood of $200-$300 with a three-year plan.
