Two arrests in man's death

TWO men were arrested Wednesday after a 25-year-old man, Peter Richard Bird, was killed early Tuesday in Black River First Nation.

Jason Moar, 20, and Brandon Bird, 21, both of Black River First Nation, were charged with second-degree murder, RCMP said Wednesday in a release.

Peter Richard Bird, who was also from Black River, about 150 kilometres north of Winnipeg, was stabbed during a confrontation at a residence at about 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, police said. An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning in Winnipeg and found Bird died of a stab wound.

The victim and the two accused were known to each other, the RCMP said.

More drunk drivers stopped

POLICE charged 28 people with drunk driving during the final week of the RCMP Christmas Checkstop program.

More than 4,000 vehicles were checked during the program's final week, which ran from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.

An RCMP D Division release said the 28 people arrested were charged with driving over 0.08 or impaired driving, and five were more charged with refusal to provide a breath sample during the same period. Police also charged 33 people for failing to wear their seatbelts, said the release.

During the four weeks the campaign ran, police said 141 people were charged with offences related to impaired driving.

More than 17,000 vehicles were checked, said the RCMP release. During the 2012-13 campaign, police also laid 98 charges for not wearing a seatbelt and issued more than 2,400 citations for other offences under the provincial Highway Traffic Act.
