Active teen taking her energy to camp
Caissy Oyugi, 13, isn't your typical tomboy. The seventh-grader loves to play soccer, basketball, ringette and ride BMX, yet has dreams of becoming a fashion designer.
It's evident in her outfit. She wears bright, bold colours, even in her hair -- she just had purple highlights put in.
Caissy will be getting her clothes a bit dirty this summer. She's going to Caddy Lake Camp with the financial support of the Sunshine Fund.
"Before the Sunshine Fund, she had never gone to camp because I couldn't afford it. It was so expensive. I'm so happy that she gets to go," said Connie Oyugi, Caissy's mother.
Connie found the Sunshine Fund after she and her family immigrated from Kenya. Her husband got a job as an HIV-AIDS researcher with the University of Manitoba, so the whole family moved with him to Winnipeg.
This is Caissy's third year going to camp through the Sunshine Fund. For the last two summers, it was Circle Square Ranch where she first rode a horse.
"I had rode a camel before, but not a horse," Caissy explains.
Connie admits her daughter's adrenaline-junkie attitude sometimes makes her nervous, especially her love of extreme biking. While at Circle Square Ranch, Caissy won first place in a BMX contest.
"I was nervous the first time I saw it, yes. But if she likes it and it's safe, it's OK. But yes, it is a little scary," Connie said, laughing.
This year, Caissy is excited to try new activities at Caddy Lake Camp, a Girl Guides camp for girls ages 7 to 15.
Caissy is a Pathfinder with the Girl Guides of Canada and says Caddy Lake has a lot of sporting activities she's excited to try such as kayaking, hiking and mountain biking.
"I see a lot of people on the brochure that are canoeing. I'm really excited for that," said Caissy. "The lake will be really fun. I can't wait to do it all."
