Activists plan to occupy Old Market Square

THE sun is out, the grass is green, Occupy is returning to the local activist scene.

On Wednesday, organizers of Occupy Winnipeg announced they will occupy Old Market Square tonight for at least one night.

The decision to open another Occupy camp was made after a march and rally on May 1, organizers said. Occupiers will meet at Mondragon on Albert Street before hauling their tents, sleeping bags and signs to the nearby square.

It's a change of venue from last fall, when the local Occupy chapter set up in Memorial Park, near the provincial legislature. That camp slowly dwindled as winter set in.

The global Occupy movement was born in New York City last fall. Supporters camped near Wall Street to protest rising income inequality and social injustice. The movement's setup -- open encampments in public spaces -- and its slogan, "We are the 99 per cent," referring to the majority of income-earners, caught fire throughout the world.

At its peak, there were more than 95 Occupy camps around the globe. After most camps were forcibly dismantled by authorities or abandoned in cold weather, the movement paused for the winter. But Occupy actions have been cropping up again this spring, with sleep-out protests in New York City and public protests on May 1.
