Alleged helper in international child-abduction plot back in city

  • Print

A Winnipeg man who is alleged to have helped his friend kidnap his two children four years ago and spirit them to Mexico has been returned to Winnipeg.

Winnipeg police said Robert Groen, 41, was extradited to Canada on July 19 and returned to Winnipeg the next day.

It's alleged Groen helped Kevin Maryk kidnap his two young children, Abby and Dominic, then seven and five years old, respectively, in August 2008 and hid them in Mexico.

Maryk and Groen were arrested by Mexican authorities at a home in Guadalajara in May. The two children were found safe and returned to their mother, Emily Cablek.

Kevin Maryk remains in custody in Mexico.

Groen faces charges of conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of abduction and failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking. He is being held in custody.
