ALS run honours aunt who battled disease

TRICIA Yerex didn't just run in memory of her aunt -- she organized an entire fundraising run for the local ALS Society.

The Legacy Run for ALS raised more than $3,000 to support patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, at St. Vital Park on Saturday.

Yerex said she organized the run in honour of her aunt, Lynne Carter, who died of ALS last year after battling the illness for about two years.

"For me, she was an independent, tenacious, strong-willed woman," she said.

"ALS affected her speech and then how she swallowed, but she continued and persevered and put one foot ahead of another. I figured this run was like that."

More than 60 people ran or walked the five kilometres.

"This is great -- and it is a first-time event," said Brian Campbell, of the ALS Society of Manitoba.

"We're a happy recipient of funding."

Wendy Novotny said she was glad to come out to help the cause.

"And today was a beautiful day for a run," Novotny said.

Yerex said she didn't intend the event to be annual, but now she is considering it.

"I have wonderful supportive co-workers, family and friends," she said.
