An eventful day of celebration

Local celebrations mark International Women's Day today:

Gail Asper will get the Queen�s  Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Gail Asper will get the Queen�s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Breakfast

7:30-9 a.m.;

Hosted by the Winnipeg South Centre Federal Liberal Association;

Gail Asper, president of the Asper Foundation and member of the board of the Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, will be presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal following her keynote speech.

Pancake breakfast

275 Broadway;

7:30-9 a.m.;

The breakfast is organized by the MFL women's committee and sponsored by the MFL, the Winnipeg Labour Council and the Canadian Labour Congress. All proceeds to the Women's Memorial Fund to support the construction of a women's memorial at the Union Centre.

Manitoba Status of Women International Women's Day Commemoration

Rotunda, Manitoba Legislative Building;

11:45 a.m.-1 p.m.;

Topic: Women in Manitoba: Leading Transformative Change.

Downtown March

The Union Centre, 275 Broadway;

5:15 p.m.;

A rally inside the Union Centre, followed by a march through the downtown and returning to the centre for refreshments and speakers.

Pink Tea: Dalnavert Museum, 61 Carlton St.

5-7 p.m.;

In the Canadian suffrage movements of the early 1900s, women fighting for the vote were discouraged and prevented from rallying together for political action. As a result, Pink Teas were organized as a way to conceal important political gatherings.

International Women's Week Cabaret of Monologues: Wild Women

Gallery at Manitoba Hydro Place, 360 Portage Ave.;

8 p.m.;

Produced by Sarasvti Productions, stories will focus on women who break barriers and reject the status quo;

Mama Cutsworth & West Central Women's Resource Centre

XX Factor Women on the Wheels of Steel Dance Party;

Funds raised will support the Drop In program at the West Central Women's Resource Centre.
