An NHL team by any other name...

Opening night for the Jets and the world takes notice.

Opening night for the Moose, Falcons, Polar Bears and no one outside of our frozen berg will care.

-- Hemisfear

What are you supposed to yell at the game? Go Polars Go? Go PB's Go? Go Bears Go? Lame, Lame, and taken.

-- derric01

Just name the team already. What a drama.

-- reviewer

Jets is such a no brainer. Instant recognition and branding.

-- beekpr1

if people are true fans, they'll be fans no matter what the team is called. but i say 'jets' - history, novelty, namesake, memories...

-- momopinion

The Polar Bears seems like the worst choice, in my opinion. Be it the Jets great, anything else, fine but POLAR BEARS? No. No way.

-- hollywood00

Come on people. If you want to support the Jets move to Phoenix. when people chant go jets go i tell them they did go, they went to phoenix. If you want to support the NHL lets move on. A new team, a new building, a new name.

-- coolguy576

I strongly prefer the Jets for similar reasons, but I'll get over it if it's not. Just as long as it's not something lame, like the Flood or the Polar Bears.

-- CurtRK

I'll cheer for the team in any case, but for most fans, it will be just that much sweeter to cheer "go Jets go". And I'm certain that will be the chant regardless, so it'll will look a bit weird if it's something else on the sweater.

-- kmc

I was a guy who waited almost 20 years for a new Star Wars movie - only to be disappointed with the Phantom Menace crap. I've waited 15 years for the Jets to come back. Mr Chipman, please don't follow George Lucas down the same disappointing road - give the fans what they want. We're looking for the legacy of Hull, Hawerchuck and Salane. Don't give us Jar Jar Binks.

-- RWY

I don't understand why you would want to be associated with a team that failed. A fresh start with new team deserves a new name and identity.

-- null

The Senators' don't own the original Senators teams history and record books but they still go on with that identity because that history belongs to the city... Bring us back our Jets and the nail will be in the coffin. I will buy the new jersey, new hat, new mini hockey stick.

-- Westclox

People want the "jets", but I think they want an NHL team more.

What, people aren't going to attend game 1 because they're called Manitoba Joes? Pfft. It will be a sell out, everyone will still wear their jets jersery and it will be absolutely nuts.

-- williewonkerz

The Winnipeg Wasps!

-- christopherleary

People are making this into WAY too big a deal.

-- Sound

Manitoba Polar Bears? Are you kidding me? That is easily the worst professional sports team name that I've heard. Just awful.

-- fishysmell

Just name the team already. Regardless, we want to buy new merchandise for Father's Day gifts.

-- JudgePerry

Mark Chipman is a smart guy. That is why he must name them the Winnipeg Jets. Anything else won't fly. GO JETS GO !
