$1-M winner gets cheque
A walk on the Boardwalk has made a Selkirk resident an instant millionaire.
The man, who pulled a $1-million "collect and win" game stamp off his coffee cup at a McDonald's restaurant, was presented with his cheque Thursday morning.
Selkirk resident Bob Curle was identified today as the winner of the $1-million prize. The winning stamp came off a large coffee he purchased at the Main Street and Selkirk Avenue McDonald's restaurant in Selkirk.
The McDonald's Monopoly Game contest was launched Sept. 25. The contest is now closed.
He's the first Canadian winner of $1 million in the contest in five years, according to a McDonald's spokeswoman.
The prize will be distributed in 20 annual payments of $50,000, the spokeswoman said.
Civil-service power probe?
WINNIPEG may review the authority it gives to its public administration to make financial decisions on the heels of questions surrounding the city's fire-hall replacement program.
Coun. Paula Havixbeck (Charleswood-Tuxedo) recently called on Winnipeg to review how it delegates authority to city administration and compare it with other municipalities.
City council delegates the approval of certain financial transactions to the public service.
Havixbeck said some cities will only give senior officials the authority to make financial decisions on municipal buildings in the range of $100,000 and $1 million. Under those rules, Havixbeck said no fire hall could have been built without prior council approval.
Council's finance committee will consider the motion at a meeting next week.
"The fire halls precipitated this," Havixbeck said. "It only came (to council) because of a cost overrun."
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Chief Reid Douglas and the city's real estate division negotiated a proposed swap of fire-hall land on Berry Street and Grosvenor Avenue and a strip of vacant land on Mulvey Avenue East to Shindico Realty for Winnipeg's new fire-paramedic Station No. 12, which was built on Shindico-owned land on Taylor Avenue.
The total cost of the new fire halls increased to $17.8 million from $15.3 million, and an external probe into fire-paramedic station replacement program is underway.
Big skeeter, snow surplus
WINNIPEG is on track for an $8.5-million surplus due to savings in snow clearing and insect control.
A city report, released Thursday, recommends the projected surplus be transferred to the city's general reserve fund at the end of the year.
Council's finance committee will review the financial update at a meeting next week.
Sherbrook Pool closed
THE City of Winnipeg has cancelled all swimming lessons at the Sherbrook Pool following an inspection.
City officials decided to temporarily close the facility on Thursday after an inspection was conducted. City engineers are expected to conduct a more detailed assessment of the facility.
Trapped, assaulted, robbed
A woman waiting for a bus on Wednesday evening was trapped inside a transit shelter by two female thieves who assaulted and robbed her.
The passenger was inside the shelter on the 1100 block of Grant Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. when two other females blocked the exit, and demanded her money and possessions, police said in a news release on Thursday. The victim was assaulted in her upper body, and one attacker produced a weapon.
The thieves fled and the victim summoned police. She was transported to hospital in stable condition.
Police describe both attackers as aboriginal in appearance, approximately 5-8 and 160 to 170 pounds. They ask anyone with information to contact police at 986-2877.
